CODE PURPLE

“Code Purple” is a program supported by the Newark Empowerment Center.  In the winter, when temperatures drop to dangerous levels, seven churches in the area open up, in rotation, for overnight housing of homeless people.  Volunteers are critical and are needed to support those events.  There are a lot of opportunities with varying amounts of time required.  Please consider helping our neighboring churches in this life saving program.   Contact Tom Parkins (302) 731 8193 mrfizzix@aol.com

Think of "cold people" when you read or hear the term "code purple". The Code Purple ministry offers cold people, the homeless in our area, supper and an overnight, 6 pm- 6 am, in a safe, warm sanctuary when local weather forecasts predict 20° F or colder overnight. Eight Newark churches participate in Code Purple. As soon as NEC declares a "Code Purple" night, the host churches activates its volunteer staff.

The Volunteer Teams:

  • Prepare supper and ready the dining area
  • Set up the sleeping area for the overnight guests
  • Greet guests and explain the rules; monitor behaviours
  • admit late arrivals until 9 pm, when doors are locked
  • stay from midnight to 6 am, in case a guest needs help; this team also prepares breakfast and sees guests out
  • clean up

Empowerment Center Volunteers Needed

There is a need for more volunteers to provide hospitality at the Newark Empowerment Center.  If you are able to volunteer once or more day per month Monday through Friday from 1 pm to 4 pm, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.  The tasks are simple and can be picked up the first day you volunteer.  To further explore or express your interest please send an e-mail to Mindy Dowsett, fhmindy@gmail.com , or stop by the Empowerment Center and talk to Mindy. The Newark Empowerment Center is located in the Newark United Methodist Church 62 E Delaware Ave, Newark and it is open M-F 1-4PM.
